    Exchange Square starts on site

DSDHA's major new public park Exchange Square has started on site at Broadgate for our client British Land.

Suspended above the live railway tracks of Liverpool Street Station, the 1.5 acre park will offer a four-fold increase in the amount of greenery, dramatically enhancing biodiversity and improving local ecology.

A technically challenging construction on a restricted urban site, the 15 month-long build will deliver a new park for the City of London.

Exchange Square is the culmination of DSDHA’s Broadgate public realm framework, and offers an unfolding meandering landscape across several levels, with opportunities for rest and reflection, aiming to encourage diverse audiences to enjoy this public amenity. Bringing nature and wellbeing to the fore, in balance with technology, Exchange Square is an informal open-air space in which to meet, celebrate, work and relax surrounded by greenery.

Exchange Square: an urban design workshop for Year 5 students from Islington

DSDHA, in partnership with British Land and Sir Robert McAlpine, recently led an urban design workshop for Year 5 pupils of William Tynedale Primary School as part of our on-going work designing public spaces for Broadgate. The purpose of this workshop was to introduce students to the thinking behind designing public spaces that fill people with delight: which spots get the most sunlight? Are people just walking through, or are they sitting down? Can you walk around the square while pushing a buggy? How many elephants can you fit in this square?

Paul, Laura, Hannah and Seyi from our team explored each of these questions with a small group of students, helping them produce models of their own version of the square. The students will be developing their designs over the coming weeks, even producing BIM models at a later stage!

DSDHA’s consented designs for Exchange Square will be on site soon.

DSDHA Submits Plans for a Major New Public Park in the City of London

We have re-imagined Broadgate's Exchange Square as a bucolic landscape suspended above the tracks of Liverpool Street Station. The proposed scheme will increase the green space four-fold and deliver a major new public park for the City of London, with its meandering forms echoing the estuarine character of East Anglia: the ultimate destination of the departing trains below.

This design builds upon the success of the first phase of our spatial strategy for the estate, which applied the notion of Time-Based urbanism to deliver innovative designs for Broadgate Circle, Finsbury Avenue Square and Broadgate Plaza.

Works to Exchange Square are expected to start on site in the autumn, with completion anticipated in the summer of 2020.
