Clitheroe Town Square
DSDHA have been successful in winning an international design competition ‘Pennine Lancashire Squared’, for a new public space and word class public realm for the Lancashire town of Clitheroe, as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of this declining market town.
The proposed new square is at the heart of a radically improved public realm which reconnects the market with the historic Town Centre and surrounding areas. Through rigorous analysis of the existing conditions and from listening to local residents we have identified a number of key public spaces for development.
Opportunity for a series of journeys linking these pocket parks, meeting places and destinations has been created by enhancing and revitalising a network of existing routes. With a greater sense of place and connection, and unique views of the castle and surrounding landscape, the new square becomes a revitalised focus of the town.
Clitheroe will become a place for shopping, for performance, gathering, celebration and pause. A place to relax and interact. A place to reflect on the uniqueness of this beautiful town.
“This is a community-led approach that the people of Clitheroe can engage with”
Stephen Hodder, Chair of the Judging Panel
