The new Foundation Unit for Canon Popham Primary School was conceived as a series of interlinked teaching spaces, which extends outdoors through generous glazed doors to a covered area which wraps around two sides of the building.
The subtle carved form of Canon Popham Foundation Unit is derived to maintain a direct visual connection from the main entrance to the playing fields and distant landscape, and to provide south facing play space for both classrooms looking towards the main school.
The irregular pitch of the roof transforms the scale of the building and changes perspective from all directions. Creating generous interior volumes, the cantilevered roof links to external playspaces which are fully integrated within the building’s structure.
As well as being bathed in natural light and abundant ventilation, a biomass boiler powers the heating and hot water to reflect the Client’s commitment to sustainability in the School.
